Both Lorde and Ariana Grande are dominant artists in today's pop genre, as both artists have numerous smash hits played frequently on the radio. However, the question remains: which one of these two female artists is superior? Here is my personal opinion.
Lyrics can be described as the substance of a song, and is a very important aspect of one (if not the most important part of a song). I haven't listened to too much Ariana, but from what I have heard, I can tell that she lacks lyrically. Her worst verse that I have heard of (she may even have worse) is as follows:
Hey baby, even though I hate ya
She basically just rhymes the same words over and over again, except for two situations: "to" and "you" and "baby" and "me" (which frankly sounds forced when she sings). If you don't already know, these lyrics are directly taken from "Problem", possibly her biggest hit ever.
On the other hand, Lorde is consistent in writing good lyrics. Here is what I think her worst verse is:
We're never done with killing time
Unlike Ariana, Lorde actually rhymes words in her worst verse (mind blown!), and uses nice wordplay and discusses themes that tie to different songs. This verse is easily better than most that Ariana has written (even though she does have ghostwriters). I don't even know what her worst verse of all time even is. Lorde clearly takes the win here.
In the end, this decision is only determined by you, but there are some facts that you should take into consideration before judging the production of both artists. Ariana Grande's production seems to match a lot of mainstream instrumentals...even though it doesn't particularly stand out.
However, Lorde's production has a more unique sound to it that few mainstream artists use. In addition, Lorde produces along with Joel Little, her main producer, which is something that Ariana Grande does not do. Lorde isn't just a singer...she is an artist.
How They Got Famous
Lorde blew up quickly, but it was because she had talent and worked hard for her fame. Ariana Grande also worked hard...except she worked hard for playing the role of a stupid character on a kid's TV show, which is how she gained her fame. She basically started making music when she was already famous...she didn't really work for the fame as a singer.
This is more opinion-based once again, but I personally enjoy listening to Lorde's voice more. In addition, even after reading through tons of websites and YouTube comments, I have never seen even one complaint about her voice (the complaints are mostly about her looks). I wish I could say the same about Ariana, but I constantly see people hating on it and complaining about using too much autotune.
I will give Ariana having credit for having a better vocal range than Lorde (even though her high notes are cringe-worthy at times), even though both artists have an impressive vocal range. This one is give or take...form your own opinion.
Lorde gives off a good impression on other teenagers...with a humble yet confident personality. She also has good intentions and is considered a good role model by many parents alike. On the other hand, Ariana Grande gives off a slutty image, which isn't very appropriate, considering a lot of her fanbase consists of children who watched the TV show she performed on.
Would you want your kid watching this?
I hope I proved my point...if you don't agree with me, that's cool though. Leave feedback in the comments, but before you go, I have one last reason why Lorde is better than Ariana Grande...she looks more attractive without makeup than Ariana.
That's all...stay tuned for more true music reviews!
